Comments: The first eight bars of Hay Burner features classic Freddie Green comping. His voice is especially clear during this short piano solo in these bars before the horns enter. Freddie largely sticks to single-note chords as counterpoint to the bass, occasionally including two-note chords for texture change. Most notes are played on the fourth (D) string, though players are encouraged to experiment with phrasing. The transition from bar 7-8 includes a somewhat unusual jump of a fourth (f to b natural), given Freddie's normal tendencies to avoid jumps of more than a third. He places a strong emphasis on beats two and four throughout.

For instructions on how to play "one-" and "two-note" Freddie Green chords, see Michael Pettersen's article in Down Beat, "Distilling Big Band Guitar: The Essence of Freddie Green."
