Charleston Jazz Initiative (CJI) is a multi-year research project that documents the African American jazz tradition in Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and its diasporic movement throughout the United States and Europe from the late 19th century through today. Special thanks to Karen Chandler, Harlan Greene, and the folks at the College of Charleston Avery Research Center for sharing this inventory with us.

The Freddie Green Estate Donates Collection to Avery for CJI Archives

The children of the late Freddie Green recently donated an impressive collection of recordings and manuscript materials to the Avery Research Center for CJI's Archives. Freddie, a native Charlestonian who studied at the Jenkins Orphanage (though not a resident), was the rhythm guitarist for the Count Basie Orchestra for nearly 50 years. By Basie's own account, he set the pace of the band and defined American swing. Freddie's son has been a supporter of CJI for several years, and was a special guest at CJI's annual symposium, "South Carolina Jazz Diaspora" held in June 2007 at the New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church in downtown Charleston.
